One Day At A Time - Living With Crohns Disease

Living with Crohns disease can be as good or as bad, as you want to make it. This may be a strange way to look at this condition, but Crohns disease has a number of factors that make it a unique disease to live with. For one thing, it's unpredictable. Living with Crohns disease is not easy, when you do not know, when your next attack will occur. The condition has no-clear cut causes and as a result, there is no cure.

The only way to deal with Crohns disease is, to learn exactly what it does to your body when you have an attack. You then need to figure out, how best to equip your body in order to be ready, when a flare-up occurs. This process includes a regime of moderate exercise and a careful moderating of your food intake, to see what exactly triggers your attacks.

What Crohns Disease Does To You?

Those who suffer from this condition or know someone who does are familiar with how difficult attacks can be to cope with. Living with Crohns disease means learning to cope with symptoms like, diarrhea, abdominal pains, weight loss, loss of appetite, fevers, and in some cases rashes and mouth ulcers. But, what exactly is the effect of these symptoms on the body? How do these attacks affect you physically?

The main damage that Crohns disease does is that it causes the body to become malnourished. The frequent diarrhea attacks and subsequent loss of appetite, not only results in weight loss but also in the loss of precious minerals that the body needs. It can take a while before the body can replenish what has been lost in a flare-up. Nausea is a side effect of these attacks and may cause sufferers to avoid eating altogether, but that is not a good idea. Due to the battering that the body takes during an attack, a lot of energy is lost, so it is not uncommon for people who suffer from this disease, to feel fatigued.

Nothing like Good Nutrition

In the absence of any surefire cure or treatment, the best way of living with Crohns disease is to fortify your body, to ensure it can take an attack when it comes. In addition, it is important to modify your diet, to ensure that you do not take foods that are apt to trigger an attack. For instance, items such as alcohol, caffeine, and milk products should be avoided completely. Anything that is overly greasy, sugary, or spicy should also be avoided. Keeping a food journal is a great way to keep track of things that may personally trigger a flare-up in you. This can be very beneficial, as some people can go attack free for a relatively long period, while other Crohns disease sufferers may deal with attacks more frequently.

It's also important to remember that cutting out foods does have its downside- while avoiding high-fiber vegetables can be beneficial in one way, it will also cause you to lose out on important vitamins and minerals. Talk to your doctor about incorporating vitamins or fortified foods into your diet, to help compensate. While Crohns disease may be a part of your life, it doesn't have to be a controlling factor. With the proper diet and exercise routine, you can make sure, your body is always in good shape and ready to face a flare up. Living with Crohns disease can be an easy thing to do, once you get the hang of it.
