Can I Take My Medication During Pregnancy?
Most medications that are used for the treatment of IBD can be used during pregnancy if they are truly needed in order to bring the disease under control or to maintain remission in someone who has had a very rocky course. However, do not take methotrexate. There is also some concern about the use of ciprofloxacin and its effect on cartilage development in the fetus. By all means, the 5-ASA containing medications and steroids, such as prednisone, can be used during pregnancy and appear to be exceedingly safe with respect to their effects on the fetus and the mother.
During your pregnancy, you should be followed closely by a gastroenterologist or other expert in IBD, as well as an obstetrician. Some health centers have high risk obstetrics units for pregnant women with chronic underlying medical conditions, such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.
